Pain is “a signal in your nervous system that something might be wrong.” It can be acute, such as the pain following surgery. Another type is chronic pain, which is a huge problem worldwide. The opioid crisis has compounded the challenge for people and medical professionals looking for a safe way to reduce and eliminate chronic inflammation and other types of discomfort. More and more people are turning to CBD for pain relief.

Benefits of Full-Spectrum Hemp Extracts

People are looking for pain relief, but they also want to avoid the negative side effects of typical medicine. This situation is why professionals are turning more often to hemp extracts with high concentrations of premium cannabidiol. CBD is one of many cannabinoid compounds derived from hemp. However, unlike THC, this natural compound does not produce any mind-altering effects and is not psychoactive.

Full-spectrum hemp extracts, which have all the natural compounds found in hemp plants, offer more CBD for pain relief than isolates and broad-spectrum formulas. That is because they offer a synergetic approach. The extract’s phytocannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and other nutrients work together to increase their therapeutic potential.

What Are Terpenes and How Do They Help With Pain?

Terpenes are compounds that add fragrance and flavor to plants. They are usually found in the resin of plants, where they are used to deter predators. However, because of their aromatherapy-like benefits, terpenes are also used in perfumes, cosmetics, foods, and cleaning products. There are over 20,000 aromatic compounds found in nature. Between 100 and 200 have been identified in hemp.

The therapeutic effects of terpenes are more concentrated when they are used alongside CBD. These essential oils are what give hemp varieties their distinct smells, flavors, and tastes. Terpenes also have some crucial benefits of their own, such as relieving anxious thoughts, improving sleep quality, maintaining healthy energy levels, and easing inflammation.

Full and broad-spectrum hemp extracts contain terpenes that can either be isolated to make a specific profile or are naturally occurring blends. Terpenes may help with inflammatory pain. Research has shown that terpenes, such as pinene and limonene, may reduce inflammation. Additionally, they work alongside CBD, which also presents potential anti-inflammatory properties.

The Science Behind Terpenes for Pain

A 2018 study in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research had excellent results involving terpenes found in cannabis. Hemp is a subspecies of the Cannabis Sativa species that contain high concentrations of CBD and small amounts of THC.

“The different cannabis chemotypes showed distinct compositions of terpenoids. The terpenoid-rich essential oils exert anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities in vitro and in vivo, which vary according to their composition … None of the essential oils was as effective as purified CBD. In contrast to CBD that exerts prolonged immunosuppression and might be used in chronic inflammation, the terpenoids showed only transient immunosuppression and might thus be used to relieve acute inflammation.”

Also, in 2018, research involving only terpenes determined that naturally occurring compounds can encourage normal joint function and reduce inflammation.

“The results showed that terpenes have promising biological effects in relation to the treatment of arthritis, with the 24 terpenes identified in our survey being effective in the modulation of inflammatory mediators important to the physiopathology of arthritis, such as IL-6, IL-17, TNF-α, NFκB, and COX-2, among others.”

Further research is needed for both terpenes and phytocannabinoids, including CBD. However, the future for terpenes for pain and CBD for pain relief look extremely promising.

How to Use CBD for Pain

Your customers have many ways to use CBD for pain relief. You can offer them these solutions through your brand by using CannGoods’ private and white label services.

CBD Tinctures

The most common method is to take CBD oil orally with a dropper. This method is sublingual. The oil absorbs under the tongue. Many people say this is the best way to get fast relief. Customers felt the effects within 15-20 minutes.

CBD Edibles

Edibles are a tasty way to get the hemp compound into your body. CBD-infused treats, gummies, and food items offer an easy way for consumers to enjoy the benefits of cannabinoids without having to worry about messy oils and measurements. CBD capsules work similar to edibles but are more suited for customers looking for a traditional-looking wellness supplement. These take about an hour to work since they have to go through the digestion process to reach the bloodstream. Tinctures and edibles have a four to six-hour duration.

CBD Creams, Balm, and Salves

With CBD creams, the compound absorbs through the skin for local results. Topical CBD works well for joint and muscle pain, as well as general soreness and stiffness related to the natural aging process or following a tough workout. In addition to being a great “anytime” option, these do not absorb into the bloodstream. That makes them safe to use alongside oils, edibles, and capsules. Customers can keep CBD creams and balms in their gym bags, at their work desk, or in their backpacks to use as needed. We often blend our topicals with other all-organic ingredients that enhance the product’s benefits, such as lavender and arnica.
